On February 2, the team led by He Zuhua, a researcher of the Institute of Plant Physiology & Ecology (SIBS, CAS), published a research paper named “Epigenetic regulation of antagonistic receptors confers rice blast resistance with yield balance” on Science, together with his partners. The study successfully cloned Pigm (a permanent broad-spectrum rice blast-resistant gene), and revealed a new epigenetic regulation mechanism of broad-spectrum rice disease resistance and yield balance. Hunan Ava Seeds Research Institute, an affiliate of LPHT, is a major undertaker of the study. Yang Yuanzhu and Qin Peng are major partners of the study.
“Rice blast, being one of the most significant rice diseases, badly threatens rice production, and can cause large-area crop failure or even fruitlessness. Given this, during the examination of new rice variety in our country, besides the indexes like yield and quality, rice blast resistance is often taken as a ‘one-vote veto’ index. Breeding high-yield high-quality rice varieties resistant to rice blast is very important for grain security.” Yang Yuanzhu (Vice President of LPHT, President of Hunan Ava Seeds Research Institute) introduced, from 2008, by tightly combining traditional breeding technologies with the technology of molecular mark assisted breeding, the Company integrated the key disease-resistant gene into infected major rice varieties, and fostered high-yield high-quality new varieties resistant to rice blast——Long Liang You 3189, Long Liang You 1074, Long Liang You 3188 and Jing Liang You 3189; the regional trials of these varieties have been completed, and examination and approval applications are about to be filed for them. The study not only theoretically deepened the knowledge about the mechanism of plant immunity and disease resistance, but also provided an effective new tool for breeding disease-resistant varieties.
Science is a learned periodical published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, one of the world’s most authoritative learned periodicals, and one of the peer-reviewed periodicals that release the best original papers meanwhile summarize and analyze existing studies and science policies. The weekly periodical is published by 51 issues every year with global circulation above 1.5 million copies. The publishing of the “Epigenetic regulation of antagonistic receptors confers rice blast resistance with yield balance” reflected the tremendous R & D strength of LPHT.Screenshot of the article published on ScienceScreenshot of the article published on ScienceScreenshot of the article published on ScienceScreenshot of the article published on ScienceScreenshot of the article published on ScienceScreenshot of the article published on ScienceScreenshot of the article published on ScienceScreenshot of the article published on Science
